Best Gluten-Free Cereal (Taste Test)

Following a gluten-free diet doesn’t mean you have to settle for a boring breakfast. Plenty of delicious gluten-free cereals would trick even the most experienced taste buds.

My wife and I sampled eight different cereals to make this list. The good news is that some of our top picks can be found at popular grocery stores.

So, how did you create this list of the best gluten-free cereals? The ranking simply came down to taste. But before we begin, let’s address the elephant in the room.

“Healthy” Gluten-Free Cereal

In our research, we found countless “healthy” gluten-free cereal brands. The truth is that these were some of the worst picks.

These healthy GF cereals are often packed with protein. And while protein has many benefits, getting it in cereal means using pea protein or whey protein.

Spoiler alert: cereal with this protein will always negatively impact the taste.

Plus, the definition of healthy is so broad. We can all agree that vegetables are better for you than candy. But what’s healthy for me might not be healthy for you.

Now that we’ve got that rant out of the way, let’s talk about the best gluten-free cereals.

Gluten-Free Cereal Ranked

The most important thing when it comes to gluten-free cereal is taste. And that’s how we ranked them here.

8. Magic Spoon

A few people at our gym love Magic Spoon, and we hate it. There’s really no in between. It’s one of those “healthy” cereals.

We had high hopes for the Cinnamon Roll flavor, but it was too artificial. But hey, each serving has 12 grams of protein and 0 grams of sugar.

7. Vitabella

Vitabella is a traditional cornflake cereal. It’s something you might find in your grandparent’s pantry because it’s so classy.

The flavor is very plain, but it’s not really a type of cereal you eat on its own. Throw some fruit and yogurt on top, and you’ve got yourself a mature breakfast.

6. Three Wishes

This cereal has a very satisfying crunch that softens over time with milk. And it has just the right amount of sweetness (not too much or too little).

This is a plant-based cereal, so if you’re not used to it, you may experience a slightly weird aftertaste. The good news is that it goes away rather quickly.

5. Choco Chimps

If you’re a chocolate lover, you’ll love this Chocolate Choco Chimps cereal. It has a nice crunchy mouthfeel with no aritficial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

If you couldn’t tell from the picture, this cereal is basically the gluten-free version of Cocoa Puffs. This is first (of two) Nature’s Path Organic cereals on this list, and they’re doing a great job.

4. Cascadian Farm

We found this brand at Whole Foods, and I’ve got to say, it’s a real winner. If you enjoyed eating Trix cereal as a kid, the flavor here comes very close.

The berry vanilla has the perfect amount of sweetness, without going overboard. There’s also no weird artifical aftertaste you might find in some cereals.

3. Chex

Sometimes you can’t go wrong with the popular brands. Who knew Chex has an extensive lineup of gluten-free cereals? Chocolate and cinnamon are our favorite flavors.

Here’s a little fun fact, Rice Chex Cereal was the first mainstream, ready-to-eat, GF cereal for breakfast. This brand is also very easy to find in stores.

2. Sunrise Crunchy Maple

This is yet another delicious gluten-free cereal made by Nature’s Path Organic. We love maple flavored anything, which is why this one ranks high on our list.

The combination of medley of rice, corn, quinoa, flax, buckwheat and amarnth, pairs perfectly with milk. You can even add some fresh fruit on top.

1. Apple Cinnamon Cheerios

Who doesn’t love Cheerios? We grew up looking at these tastey little circles in our cereal bowl. And when it comes to taste, Apple Cinnamon is simply the best.

But the original flavor is also a good option – which is gluten-free too. Another good thing about Cheerios is that they can be found everywhere.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for the best gluten-free cereal, Apple Cinnamon Cheerios are the top pick. This just shows us that the best choices have been right in front of our faces the whole time.

But you really can’t go wrong with the other brands on this list. That is unless you really don’t like the weird aftertaste that tends to come along with “protein” cereal.
