As a Connecticut resident, I’ve been going to Mystic since I was a kid. It has a certain small-town charm that’s perfect for visiting during the summer months.

And while Mystic is famously known for its seaport and aquarium, there’s also a wide selection of restaurants.

Finding Gluten-Free in Mystic

Even though Mystic has a small population, it has a lot to offer in terms of dining. After all, Mystic is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Connecticut.

That’s good news if you’re looking for some GF restaurants. You can expect to find a lot of seafood in this historic New England village.

For example, if you’re craving a hot lobster roll on a gluten-free bun, you’re in luck! Most restaurants are located on Main Street, near the famous Mystic River Bascule Bridge.

I recommend parking your car on Water Street and walking around this area, as it has easy access to restaurants and shops.

Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough

GF Appetizers: Clam chowder, deviled eggs, lobster salad on a bed of fresh greens

GF Entrees: Lobster roll, lobster salad roll, fish tacos, lobster tacos, chicken tacos, cajun shrimp tacos, hot dogs

This location is just a short drive (approximately 3 miles) from downtown Mystic. It’s where we went for our gluten-free lobster rolls.

Bravo Bravo

GF Appetizers: Scallop Crudo, Mussels Pei, Beef Carpaccio, baby red & green leaf salad

GF Entrees: Pan-seared scallops, salmon, and statler chicken

Deviant Donuts

We loved this apple cinnamon donut!

This is not a dedicated gluten-free donut shop. However, Deviant Donuts does offer some mouth-watering gluten-free donuts.

The selections are constantly changing, so please check their menu for the most up-to-date information.

GF Appetizers: Vegetables & hummus, steamed mussels, maple sriracha wings

GF Entrees: Burgers & sandwiches on GF buns, pan-seared scallops

Friar Tuck’s Tavern

GF Entrees: There usually aren’t many gluten-free options at pubs. But Friar Tuck’s Tavern has GF buns if you want to get a burger or sandwich.

Jealous Monk

GF Entrees: This place has gluten-free buns, which means you can grab a GF burger or sandwich. Their salmon entree can also be made gluten-free.

Mystic Salad Co.

GF Entrees: Salads are always a safe option when it comes to gluten-free dining (as long as you leave out croutons). This salad shop offers plenty of fresh and healthy dining options.

Sift Bake Shop

Can’t forget about the coffee!

Although this isn’t a dedicated gluten-free bakery, you can still find some treats here. Just keep in mind that this place is extremely popular, and there’s always a long line.

When we visited, there were two flavors of gluten-free cookies, as well as macarons. We also loved the coffee!

GF Appetizers: Nachos, chips & salsa, chips & guacamole, chips & queso

GF Tacos: Barbacoa, al pastor, carnitas, pollo verde, fried plantain, grilled swordfish, the gringo

Via Emilia

GF Entrees: You won’t find many GF items specifically listed on the menu here. However, this Italian restaurant offers gluten-free pasta, allowing them to customize dishes to suit your dietary needs.

Young Buns Doughnuts

2025 update: Unfortunately, Young Buns Doughnuts closed at the end of 2024. They will be missed.

The good news is that you can still find some gluten-free baked goods right down the street at Sift Bake Shop. The same people own this bakery.

In a press release, the owners discussed their desire to focus on new and exciting opportunities. They also hinted at a Young Buns Doughnuts pop-up shop in the future.
